As a part of its Indian practice, Herbert Smith LLP has significant focus on supporting legal education in India. Thus, in 2008, the firm launched its “Indian University Support Initiative” as part of this wider commitment to India.
Under this initiative, Herbert Smith has organised a number of international training programmes and educational events in association with leading law schools in India.
Each event provided an opportunity for Indian law students to interact and learn from, some of the world's leading lawyers and academics such as Edward Walker-Arnott, Chris Parsons, Justin D'Agostino, partners at Herbert Smith LLP, and Professor Timothy Endicott, the Dean of Oxford Law and Professor James Edelman, Barrister, Fellow at Keble College and lecturer and Professor of the Law of Obligations in the Faculty of Law.

Moot Court Competition: NUJS, Kolkata
Since 2008, Herbert Smith has sponsored the annual NUJS National Corporate Law Moot Court Competition. The latest edition of the Moot (now in its fourth year) shall be held between 10 - 12 February 2012. Chris Parsons, chairman of India group, Nicholas Peacock, partner at Herbert Smith and Professor Paul Davies of the University of Oxford shall be travelling to NUJS, Kolkata to be among the judges for the final rounds of the competition.

Lecture Series: NLS, Bangalore
Edward Walker-Arnott, former senior partner at Herbert Smith and an Honorary Visiting Professor of Corporate Law in the Law Department, University College London delivered a Corporate Law Lecture Programme in NLS, Bangalore in March 2011. This was following on from similar programmes in previous years at NALSAR, Hyderabad and NUJS, Kolkata.

Lecture Series: NUJS, Kolkata
Herbert Smith continued with its annual Herbert Smith/Oxford Law Teaching Programme in February 2011. Held at the NUJS campus before the Moot, this programme saw Chris Parsons lecture on cross-border M&A and negotiations skills, and Professor Timothy Endicott, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford lecture on aspects of constitutional law.
Presentation: NLU, Delhi and NUJS, Kolkata
Chris Parsons and Professor Timothy Endicott, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, delivered a presentation to the students of NLU, Delhi in February 2011. Chris and Timothy provided an overview of the opportunities for Indian law school students, and also a case study of the Tata Steel/Corus transaction. A week later, Chris and Timothy also gave a similar presentation at NUJS, Kolkata.

Chris Parsons delivered a presentation to the students of GNLU, Gandhinagar in January 2011 on the HS Indian Internship programme and the various opportunities available to Indian law school students.

The second edition of the Herbert Smith India Essay Competition was held by Herbert Smith and the National Law School of India Review, NLS, Bangalore's flagship journal, in 2010. The winners were invited to present their papers at the annual NLSIR Symposium, held on 10-11 April 2010.
Lecture series: NALSAR, Hyderabad
Edward Walker-Arnott, former senior partner at Herbert Smith and an Honorary Visiting Professor of Corporate Law in the Law Department, University College London delivered a four day Corporate Law Lecture Programme in NALSAR, Hyderabad in the first week of February 2010.
Lecture series: NLS, Bangalore
A week long lecture programme was given at the beginning of January 2010 by Chris Parsons and Professor Timothy Endicott, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, at NLS, Bangalore. While Chris Parsons spoke about private mergers and acquisitions and negotiation skills, Professor Timothy Endicott lectured on the common law and public law.
Lecture series: NLU, Jodhpur
A week long lecture programme was given in February 2009 by Herbert Smith partners Chris Parsons and Justin D'Agostino at NLU, Jodhpur. The international course covered cross-border mergers and acquisitions, negotiation skills and a workshop on arbitration.

In 2009, Chris Parsons lectured on Tata Steel's public takeover of Corus at the law college of Nandurbar, in Northern Maharashtra as a guest of Rajendra B Raghuvanshi, former Additional Solicitor General of India.
