David Gold, senior partner

Herbert Smith is one of the leading international law firms in China, with offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Our China practice includes lawyers of many nationalities. Some of our lawyers commenced their legal training or education in a variety of jurisdictions including England, Hong Kong, USA, Singapore, Australia and France while others trained in mainland China. Our aim is to develop a diverse team offering equal career progression opportunities for everyone.

Offices

The Beijing office opened in 1999 and represents Chinese and foreign corporations and financial institutions in corporate reorganisations, initial public offerings, financings and on and off-shore M&A. In 2003 we opened our Shanghai office, which now advises Chinese and foreign companies on China-related investment, projects, general commercial transactions and disputes.

The firm's transactional practices in Shanghai and Beijing are well established, with market leading reputations for capital markets, corporate transactions, banking, energy and project finance. In 2006 we launched our mainland China disputes practice with a team based in Shanghai.

Our Asian headquarters is our Hong Kong office, the firm's largest single presence outside the UK. The corporate department there includes specialists in equity capital markets and M&A, energy and finance, as well as a US securities team. The energy and projects practice advises investors in energy and infrastructure projects in Asia and across the world. The office also handles some of the largest and most important disputes in the region.

We’re now accepting applications for training contracts beginning in 2010 and 2011

We are also interested to hear from PRC law students interested in qualifying as an English or Hong Kong lawyer with a vew to work in the PRC upon qualification.
