Hannah Williams “Seeing how much time, skill and effort Herbert Smith devoted to graduate recruitment highlighted their dedication to potential young lawyers”

Scholarship programme

We are offering the opportunity for students from 10 secondary schools across the UK to become scholars during their final year of A-levels, and for the duration of their undergraduate degree.

The aim of the scholarship programme is to raise the profile of the firm across a wider target audience, and to complement our current university activities, helping us secure the best talent for our programmes.

What does it involve?

  • an induction day in the office during the summer holidays with your fellow scholars from other selected schools
  • a week's work experience during your final year of A-levels, paid accommodation and travel expenses
  • a trainee solicitor at the firm to be a "buddy" and point of contact during your time as a scholar
  • one week's work experience and £500 sponsorship for each year of your undergraduate degree. Each time you visit the firm, you will be placed in a different practice area, this will give you an excellent insight into the broad range of work done at a City firm
  • involvement with the firm's on-campus activities at your university. You will be regarded as an ambassador for the firm; we will ask your thoughts and opinions on what we should be getting involved with on your campus, you will help us advertise our recruitment events and hopefully attend as many of them as possible yourself
  • a dedicated point of contact in our graduate recruitment team who will be on hand to support you during your time as a scholar

    Who can apply?
The programme is open to all students currently in the first year of A-level studies at our selected schools who are interested in becoming a scholar. We are looking for those who have an interest in the business world and are keen to learn more about a legal career. Please just find your school name on the drop-down menu on the application form.

    When to apply?
Applications for the scheme will open on 15 February 2010 and will close on 30 April 2010.

    Post scholarship…
We understand at this stage it is very hard to decide which career is for you…the options seem endless. We would therefore like to stress that becoming a scholar does not mean you will have to study law at university, in fact, 50% of our trainees are students who have not studied law as their undergraduate degree.

You are also under no obligation to apply for one of our programmes. We simply ask you to help us promote Herbert Smith for the duration of your scholarship with us.
