About the portraits

As part of our broad commitment to the community, Herbert Smith sponsors the National Portrait Gallery. In light of this, it seemed appropriate to commission one of today’s most original portrait photographers to provide the portrait images for this brochure.

Monica Ruzansky was born in Mexico, but is now based in New York. She has exhibited around the world, including at the Queens Museum of Art, New York and the Fine Art Palace, Mexico City. She photographs portraits using a two-way mirror, so her subjects are contemplating their own reflections – giving us an insight into their innermost thoughts, experiences and emotions.

“I encourage people to start an inner dialogue with their own reflection… condensing identity and personal history in a specific time and space.” The portraits of Herbert Smith people were photographed using this unique technique.
